Recently, the Ministry of Education issued the Provisions on the Administration of the Use of the Standard Spoken and Written Chinese Language in Information Technology Products, effective from March 1, 2023. As the first thematic rules, the Provisions preliminarily set up administrative rules to regulate the use of standard spoken and written Chinese language in information technology products. With a focus on three categories of information technology products including, the Provisions separately set out the standards for different categories of information technology products, especially with a focus on basic software, intelligent language and text processing software, and digital and online publications. Meanwhile, a service-oriented approach is emphasized. Relevant products are required to provide users with such functions as language and text pop-up messages and feedback on opinions. The products tailored for persons with disabilities, minors or the elderly should cater to their special needs. Besides, the Provisions clarify the administrative responsibilities of the departments in charge of the work related to spoken and written language at all levels, and call for efforts to strengthen work coordination and inter-departmental cooperation, in a bid to improve the effectiveness of administration. While regulating the management, the responsible departments should take into full consideration the features of fast-growing information industry, and set aside the development space for intelligent processing and other information technologies of languages and texts.
