BEIJING, May 7 -- A public prosecution has been initiated against Gou Zhongwen, former head of the General Administration of Sport of China, on charges of bribery and abuse of power.
The case of Gou, also a former member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and former deputy head of the Committee on Ethnic and Religious Affairs of the CPPCC National Committee, has been filed by prosecutors of the Yancheng Municipal People's Procuratorate in east China's Jiangsu Province to the Intermediate People's Court of Yancheng, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said on Wednesday.
Gou was accused of taking undue advantage of his various former positions to secure profits for others and illegally accepting substantial bribes in the form of money and valuables, the SPP said in a statement.
Gou was also accused of abusing power, which caused heavy losses to public property and damaged the interests of the state and the people.
The lawsuit follows the conclusion of an investigation by the National Commission of Supervision into Gou's case.
